GARDNER – Edward W. Hurd, 92, of 104 Church Street, Gardner, formerly of Westbrook, ME, died Thursday evening, October 27th, in Notre Dame Long Term Health Care, Worcester, with his family at his side.
One of 13 children, he was born in Bangor, Maine on February 22, 1919, the son of the late Oakman and Iva (Collins) Hurd and graduated from Bangor High School and Beals Business College in Bangor. Ed lived in Westbrook, Maine for most of his life until moving to Gardner four years ago.
Ed worked for Stanley J. Leen Co, South Portland Shipyard before joining the Navy. After the war, he worked for Stultz Electric in Westbrook for 47 years. During World War Two, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an electrician third class and served in the African-European Campaign. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Westbrook, Maine, for 60 years, serving on the Finance Committee and as a Deacon several times. He was named a Deacon Emeritus.
Ed joined the Prides Corner Kiwanis Club in 1968. He served as Lt. Governor of Kiwanis 1985-86. While Lt. Governor, he founded the Scarborough Kiwanis Club and was a very active member until 2008, when he moved to Massachusetts. He was a former member and Past Commander of Westbrook VFW Post.
Ed volunteered for ten years at Portland Soup Kitchen and for eight years in the Ronald McDonald House. He was an avid stained glass maker and a beautiful artist. After moving to Gardner, he became a member of Ovila Case Post #905 VFW.
His wife, Carolyn (Little) Hurd, died in 199 4. He leaves a son, Robert F. Hurd and his wife Jody of Gardner; a brother George Hurd of Rochester, NY; a sister Joan Swindell of Auburn, ME; a daughter-in-law Dorcas H. Hurd of Westminster, MA; six grandchildren, Aaron R. Hurd and his wife Michelle of Attleborough, MA , Katherine J. Larocque of Northfield, Adam C Hurd of Westminster, MA, , Joel R. Hurd and his wife June M. Peoples of Pierepont, NY, Simon T. Hurd of Oakland, Ca and Sarah Hurd and husband Daniel J. Aulenti of Milford, 10 great grandchildren, Devon, Megan and Ethan Hurd; Kaitlyn, Nicole and Zachary Hurd; Porter and Rose Hurd; and Walker and Eden Aulenti and several nephews and nieces. Ed was predeceased by a son, Ronald Hurd in 2010.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 3rd at 11 A.M. in the First Baptist Church, 733 Main Street, Westbrook, Maine. A calling hour from 10 to 11 A.M. will precede the service in the church.
Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland, Maine.
