Agnes "Nan" (Johnston) MacDougall

WINCHENDON - Agnes "Nan" (Johnston) MacDougall, 93, of 32 Hospital Hill Road, Gardner, died peacefully Wednesday evening, January 7th, in the Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner. Nan was born in Toronto, Canada on May 29,1915 to John Johnston and Margaret Davidson of Scotland. She graduated from high school at the age of fifteen and went to work immediately to help support her siblings. She met Jack Byron MacDougall, a former U.S. China Marine, of Imperial Valley, California at a USO dance in Toronto, while he was on his way to Europe with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Byron's troop ship was torpedoed off Nova Scotia and upon his return to Canada she and Byron were married in 1940. She moved to San Diego, California in 1941 when Byron reenlisted in the United States Marine Corps, when the United States entered World War Two. Nan remained living in Southern California until 2002, when she moved to Winchendon to be close to her family. Early in her career, Nan was one of the first female executives with a major California bank, First National Bank of California. She then worked for thirty years for Grossmont Escrow in La Mesa, California and later owned her own business, Foothills Escrow Co. in El Cajon, California. Following her retirement, she traveled extensively in foreign countries. She enjoyed playing golf and tennis, walked six miles a day well into her eighties, and was active with the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels. Nan leaves two sons, Robert Mason MacDougall of Oakland, CA and Bruce Iain MacDougall of Winchendon; Bruce's wife Margaret Hawthorn, also of Winchendon; ; three grandchildren, Molly MacDougall of Henniker, NH, Ruby MacDougall of New York City, NY and Sadie MacDougall of Acworth, NH; two great grandsons, Elliot Birch and Amos Cricket Jones of Acworth and several nephews and nieces. Nan was predeceased by her husband in 1970 and by her siblings, Barbara, John, Alex, Sam, Peggy and Roberta. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 14th at 11 A.M. in the Monadnock Friends Meeting House, 3 Davidson Road, Jaffrey, NH. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, San Diego, CA, with her husband Byron, at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 8 Union Street, Gardner, MA. 01440.
