WINCHENDON - Albert H. "Hec" Lemire, 88, of 207 River Street, Winchendon, died Wednesday afternoon, October 1st in the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital. He was born in Winchendon on March 19,1920, the son of the late Hector J. and Dorilla E. (Ricard) Lemire and was a lifelong resident of Winchendon. Al was a construction contractor for many years. He had his own machine shop and also did woodworking. Hec had the first hydraulic backhoe, a Hopto, in this area. He made the door knocker for Artisan Lodge of Masons and assembled the clock at the old Murdock High School. Al was also a former Deputy Sherriff in Worcester County. He attended Worcester Trade School and served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant and flight engineer during World War Two. He served in Panama and South America. Hec was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW. Al was also a member of Artisan Lodge of Masons and served, at one time, on the Board of Public Works, the Industrial Finance Committee and Monument Committees in the Town of Winchendon. Hec was a member of numerous antique car clubs and enjoyed growing roses. At one time, he owned a Sicilian burrow, "Sharlie," to allow his grandchildren to have a ride on his hay wagon. His wife of 55 years, Sylvia M. (Bastille) Lemire, died in 1996. He leaves two sons, Albert H. Lemire Jr. of Nashua, NH and Bruce C. Lemire of Greenville, TN.; a brother, William E. Lemire of Winchendon; four granddaughters, Deborah L. Adams, Laura L. Dix, Anissa A. Borey and Amy K. Aviles; a grandson, Albert H. Lemire 3rd; eight great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard V. Lemire and Charles M. Lemire and two sisters, Rita E. Crabtree and Mary A. Gandy. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 4th at 10 A.M. in the Snow-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Jackson L. Williams will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Riverside Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home will be Friday, October 3rd from 6 to 8 P.M. with a Masonic Funeral Service at 7 P.M.
