OTTER RIVER – Aldo A. “Red” DiVirgilio, 83, of 157 State Road, Otter River, died peacefully Friday evening, January 21 st , in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester.
He was born in Otter River on May 15, 1927, the son of the late Filippo and Maria T. (DiDeo) DiVirgilio and was a lifelong resident of Otter River.
Red was a 1945 graduate of the former Templeton High School and joined the United States Navy following his graduation. He proudly served his country during World War Two, serving aboard the USS Rupertus. Red worked many years ago for the former Heywood Wakefield Furniture Company and then worked as a repairman for New England Telephone Company and AT and T from 1955 until his retirement in 1982.
Red was a founding member of the Otter River Sportsmans Club and was a member of the Roger P. Warfield Post 373 American Legion in Baldwinville and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of St. Martins Church in Otter River. His hobbies were gardening and traveling but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Theresa H. (Chojnowski) DiVirgilio; four children, Susan T. DiVirgilio of Royalston, Robert A. DiVirgilio of Vieques, Puerto Rico, Maria D. Tourigny and her husband Vincent of Hubbardston and Linda J. DiVirgilio of Orange, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and several nephews and nieces. A brother, Camillo A. “Red” DiVirgilio, predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 28 th at 10 A.M. in St. Martins Church, State Road, Otter River. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Baldwinville.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Friday, January 28 th from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M.
