ASHBURNHAM – Avis M. (Walcott) Salo, 91, of 8 Puffer Street, died peacefully Sunday evening, August 24th in UMASS Memorial Hospital, Worcester, with her family at her side.
She was born in Ashburnham on May 16, 1923, daughter of the late Edmund and Grace (Chapman) Walcott and was a lifelong resident of Ashburnham. In 1942 she graduated from Cushing Academy.
Avis worked for many years as a cafeteria worker in Ashburnham schools. She worked at Cushing Academy as a dining hall attendant until her retirement six years ago. She was a lifelong member of Ashburnham Community Church and American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of Ashburnham Grange and VFW. Her hobbies included reading, watching television, dining out and watching movies. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with family.
Her husband, Harvey A. Salo, died in 2006. She leaves four children, Louise Piquette of Gardner, Gerry Charland and her husband Bob of Gardner, Robert Salo and his wife Denise of Ashburnham and Carolyn Salter and her husband Brian of Winchendon; a brother, James Walcott of Fitchburg, twelve grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A grandson, Matthew Perry; three brothers, Raymond Walcott, Henry Walcott and Aubrey Walcott Rodenizer preceded her in death.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Thursday, August 28th from 10AM to 12 Noon. A graveside service will follow in New Cemetery, Ashburnham, where she will be carried to her grave by her grandsons, Thursday at 12:30 P.M. The Rev. Charles Mansfield will officiate.
