RINDGE, NH - Barbara (Preble) Rice, 95, formerly of Main Street, Rindge, NH, died peacefully Saturday morning, June 29th in Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Jaffrey, NH, with her daughter at her side. Barbara’s husband, John B. Rice, died in 1978.
She was born in Quincy, MA on November 4, 1917, daughter of the late James R. and Mary Ella (Adams) Preble and graduated from Quincy High School and Bryant and Stratton College. She had lived in Rindge since 1955.
During World War Two, Barbara was a member of the WAVES (Navy) and upon her return from service worked at the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory in Dorchester, MA. She also worked at the Massachusetts Investors Trust in Boston. Upon marrying and moving to Rindge, Barbara worked at the Peterborough Guernsey, at the Rindge switchboard as a telephone operator and for Rindge Selectmen’s Office. She worked many years at the Cathedral of the Pines and was named as a Trustee Emeritus in 1993. She retired in 1980. Barbara was a volunteer worker for the Monadnock Community Hospital and American Cancer Society. In 1996, she was named Citizen of the Year in Rindge.
Barbara was a charter member of Rindge Women’s Club, Rindge Historical Society, Rindge Veteran’s Association, DAR, Colonial Dames, Granite State WAVES and Mayflower Society. She was also a member of Rindge Congregational Church.
She leaves a daughter, Sarah (Sally) Rice McCaigue and her husband Lenny McCaigue of Brookline, NH, and a much loved grandson Colin Alexander McCaigue as well as nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Robert W. Preble and Donald A. Preble, predeceased her.
Private graveside services will be held in Hillside Cemetery, Goddard Road, Rindge.
