GARDNER - Barbara A. (Shimkunas) Stockdale, 73, of 104 Church Street, Gardner died peacefully Wednesday evening, February 27th in Legend Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gardner, with her family at her side.
She was born in Gardner on March 24, 1939, daughter of the late Steven J. Shimkunas and Charlotte (Feltman) Shimkunas Bennett and was a resident of Gardner for most of her life. In 1957, Barbara graduated from Gardner High School.
Barbara worked as a machine operator at Fosta-Tek Plastics in Leominster for several years until her retirement. Many years ago, she had worked at Bards and worked as a waitress. She also had worked at Ray Plastics, where she met her husband, George. Barbara was known for making beautiful wedding cakes and baking breads. She also enjoyed traveling to Europe on several occasions and knitting. Barbara loved cats and was very supportive of animal shelters.
Her husband, George E. Stockdale, died in 1985. A son, James R. Stockdale, who died in 2004, and two sisters, Sandra Walker, who died this month, and Deborah Bennett, also predeceased her. She leaves her sisters, Linda Chase and her husband Richard of Baldwinville, Alice Gallant of Gardner, Elizabeth Swenson of East Templeton, Natalie Mustakangas of Worcester, Faith Gallant of Fitchburg and Nancy Guidette of Winchester, NH; three stepchildren, George E. Stockdale, Jr., Irma Ramos and Rita Young, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4th at 11 A.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Francis A. Roberge will officiate. A calling hour will precede the funeral service on Monday, March 4th from 10 to 11 A.M.
Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
