TEMPLETON – Bertha Alice (Monroe) Bryant, 83, of 107 Dudley Road, Templeton, died peacefully Wednesday morning, February 29th, in Baldwinville Nursing Home.
She was born in Winchendon on March 26th, 1928, the daughter of the late William A. and Ruth C. (Folsom) Monroe. Bertha, a graduate of Murdock High School, went on to receive her undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and did graduate study at Simmons College. She had made her home in Templeton since 1951.
A teacher in Gardner and Winchendon for many years, Bertha taught home economics and science at Gardner High School, the former Streeter School in Winchendon, Murdock High School, and Prospect School in Gardner. She retired from teaching in 1971.
During World War II, she served as a spotter for the Army Air Force Aircraft Warning Service in Winchendon.
Bertha was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church and the Putnam Alliance in Winchendon. She was a member of the Templeton Historical Society, taught canning, freezing, and nutrition for the Worcester County Extension Service, and volunteered at Heywood Hospital in Gardner for more than fifty years. In addition, she served as a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout troop leader.
Her cats, bird watching, and gardening brought her much happiness throughout her life. Bertha had a passion for collecting glassware, she enjoyed braiding rugs and caning chairs, and she was rarely seen without a pair of knitting needles in her hands.
She leaves her husband of sixty years, Roger A. Bryant; two sons, Wayne Bryant of Plainville and Glenn Bryant of Orange; a daughter, Leslie Bryant of Maynard; a stepdaughter, Nancy (Bryant) King of Athol; and a grandson, Benjamin Bryant Orcheski of Maynard. A brother, William A. Monroe Jr., predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on April 21st at the Universalist Unitarian Society, 126 Central Street, Winchendon, MA 01475.
There are no calling hours.
Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Winchendon.
