WESTFIELD, MA. - C. Carroll Rock, 88, of 392 West Road, Westfield, MA. and formerly of Atkinson, N.H., died Saturday, January 28th in the Mt. View Nursing Home in Montgomery, MA.
He was born in New York City, New York on April 13,1917, the son of George and Helene (Gilligan) Rock and had lived in Westfield for two years. Carroll was an electrical engineer for 44 years at Bell Laboratories until his retirement. He was educated in South Orange, New Jersey schools and graduated from Newark, New Jersey College of Engineering, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. He had lived in Atkinson, N.H. from 1960 until 1980, when he retired. An avid swimmer, boater and fisherman, he moved to Cudjoe Key, Florida after his retirement and returned to New England in 2002.
He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed target shooting and gymnastics. He also had a single engine pilots license. During World War Two, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. He worked with both radar and radio and was based out of Quonset Point, Rhode Island as part of the Anti-Submarine Development Detachment, Atlantic Fleet. Carroll was also a Commander in the Naval Reserves until his retirement in 1980.
His first wife, Marian (Maloney) Rock, died in 1971 and his second wife, Frieda A. (Hein) Kenyon Rock, died last year. He leaves three daughters, Mary Ellen Carroll of Wayland, MA, Evelyn Strasfeld of Westfield, MA. and Kathleen R. Stone of Brewster, MA. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
At his request, his body was donated for medical research to the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA. No funeral services are planned.
