Cheryl A. (Girouard) Benson

WINCHENDON – Cheryl A. (Girouard) Benson, 53, of 81 Elmwood Road, Winchendon died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, June 19th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after being stricken ill at home.
She was born in Winchendon on January 14, 1960, daughter of A. June (Burns) Girouard of Winchendon and the late Francis H. “ Frank” Girouard. A lifelong resident of Winchendon, Cheryl was a graduate of Murdock High School and Mt. Wachusett Community College, where she received her Degree in Nursing.
Cheryl worked at the Henry Heywood Hospital and Winchendon Health Center as a registered nurse for over 30 years. She was also an EMT for the Town of Winchendon. Cheryl was the first female EMT at Wood’s Ambulance. Early in her nursing career, Cheryl worked at Athol Hospital and worked with Traveling Nurses, traveling to Colorado and New Orleans. She will be remembered as a caring nurse, who went out of her way to be gracious and kind to her patients.
Cheryl greatly enjoyed traveling the world, camping and scuba diving with her family. Her love for animals was evident in her many rescued pets, horses, and "zoo" of creatures. She could often be found horseback riding, crafting, scrap-booking, and sewing. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family. She was known for being the rock to which everyone around her was anchored, and will be deeply missed by all. She attended The United Parish in Winchendon.
In addition to her mother, she leaves her husband of 27 years, Brian Benson Sr; three children, Brian Benson Jr, Kira Benson and Adam McKenney, all of Winchendon; a sister, Jana Girouard of Winchendon; her great nephews, Ethan and Brendan Girouard, and other members of her extended family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, sister, aunt, and niece.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 26th at 11 A.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. F. Calvin Miller will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Tuesday, June 25th from 4 to 8 P.M.
