WINCHENDON – Dante T. Travaglini, 86, of 547 Central Street, Winchendon, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, February 2nd, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
He was born in Winchendon on August 10, 1925, the son of the late Viscardo and Anna (Andreoni) Travaglini and returned to Winchendon in September of 2010 after living East Orange, New Jersey for 46 years.
During World War Two, Dante proudly served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Private. He was fought in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe and received a Purple Heart, as well as the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
Dante was a construction worker in New Jersey for several years and later worked for 17 years as a locker room attendant at Baltusrol Golf Course in Springfield, New Jersey. Before moving to New Jersey, Dante played on the Coop Ball Team in Winchendon. He had the distinction of once shooting a Hole in One in Winchendon.
His wife of 61 years, Lea (Baviera) Travaglini, died in 2010. He leaves local nephews and nieces, James T. Tolo Jr, Rene P. Helie, Susan Giardini, Michael Travaglini and Joseph Travaglini. Dante was also predeceased by a brother, Wilson Travaglini and three sisters, Eva Tolo, Dorothy Helie and Theresa Giardini.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 7th at 11 AM in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street, Winchendon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Tuesday, February 7th from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M.
