WINCHENDON – David N. “Butch” Derby, 70, of 54 School Street, died peacefully Monday afternoon, May 6, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Winchendon on May 18, 1948, son of the late Charles S. and Cecile B. (Gingras) Derby was a 1966 graduate of Murdock High School, where he played football, basketball, track and field. While at Murdock, Butch set the record for the shot put.
Butch worked for 35 years as a second class fireman at New England Woodenware until his retirement. He had served as a volunteer firefighter with the Winchendon Fire Department for 8 years. His hobbies included golfing, scuba diving and following the New England Patriots. He had several great collections.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Dale A. (Rocheleau) Derby; two children, Lisa M. Musgrove and her husband Paul of Winchendon and David R. Derby and his wife Veronica of Ashburnham; a sister, Joyce A. Berry of Ashland; four grandchildren, Thaddeus Derby, Bella Derby, Ashlyn Musgrove and Ethan Musgrove and his dog Missy. A brother, Charles J. Derby, preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street, Winchendon.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 5 to 7 P.M.
