WINCHENDON – Donald A. Bernard, 90, a former longtime resident of Winchendon, died peacefully, Friday morning, January 29th in Hickory Hill Retirement Community, Burkeville, VA.
He was born in Winchendon on November 5, 1925, son of the late Ronaldo and Mary Callahan Bernard. He grew up in Winchendon, where he was a graduate of Murdock High School. He lived in Winchendon for most of his life, moving to live with his son in October, 2011.
Don worked for many years at Heywood Wakefield Furniture Company in Gardner, where he was foreman of its finishing department. He later worked at Lilly Industrial Coating in Templeton for several years until his retirement. A proud member of the United States Navy during World War Two, he was awarded the World War Two Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theatre Medal. He was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW, both of Winchendon.
His wife, June P. (McGregor) Bernard, died in 1995. He leaves a son, James D. Bernard and his wife Brenda of Richmond, VA; two granddaughters, Christina Dunaway and Jamie Fink; two great grandsons, Tucker Dunaway and Dakota Fink and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances Bernard of Bonita Springs, FL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert R. Bernard.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 5, 2016 at 10 A.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be held Friday, February 5th from 9 to 10 A.M. preceding the funeral.
