WINCHENDON – Donald A. Thompson, 88, of 857 Alger Street, Winchendon died peacefully at home Tuesday, May 21st, with his family at his side.
He was born in Manchester, CT on November 22, 1924, son of the late Edgar M. and Mae (Hobby) Thompson and had lived in Winchendon since 1941.
Don worked for the former family business, Thompson Coal and Grain Co. in Winchendon until 1970 and later worked for Baldwinville Products until his retirement in 1989. During World War Two, he proudly served in the United States Army. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre and was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge, he went back to high school and graduated from Murdock High School with the class of 1945.
Don was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and Lt Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW. He was also a member of The United Parish and the 157th Regiment and 45th Infantry Division Associations. A devoted family man, he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don enjoyed fishing, gardening and camping as well as reading history, especially the Civil War.
He was predeceased by two wives, Marjorie (Guevin) Thompson, who died in 1997 and Jacqueline Marilyn (Lafleur) Thompson, who died in 2004. He leaves five sons, Richard M. Thompson and his wife Anne-Marie of Charlton, Steven D. Thompson and his wife Kathleen of Winchendon, John C. Thompson and his wife Laurie of Winchendon, Russell J. Thompson and his wife Diane of Townsend and Alan A. Thompson and his wife Priscilla of Groton, VT; a sister, Betty Jeffrey of Holliston, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Ernest M. Thompson and Allan R. Thompson predeceased him
Military funeral services will be held Friday, May 31st at 2 PM in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. The Rev. F. Calvin Miller will officiate.
There are no calling hours.
