Edith Race, a vibrant and beloved soul, passed away on January 19, 2025, just shy of her 94th birthday. Born on January 20, 1931, in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, Edith's life was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Her journey, filled with joy and sorrow, love and loss, was nothing short of extraordinary. In the words of Albert Schweitzer, "The only thing of importance, when we depart, will be the traces of love we have left behind."
Edith led a fulfilling professional life as a bus driver, serving the community of Winchendon, Massachusetts. She was not just a bus driver but a confidante, a friend, and a beacon of light for many who greeted her day in and day out. Her bus was not just a vehicle, but a mobile community where many found comfort, solace, and a friendly ear. Edith, through her actions, embodied the essence of Maya Angelou's quote, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
In her personal life, Edith was a symbol of strength and love. She was a nurturing mother to Michael Race, Bette-Lou Dower, and her husband Jack, Fredrick Race, Maxine Leesha and her husband James, Russell Race, Caroline Stewart, Thomas Race, Margaret Steele, Daniel Race, and Charles Race. She was a compassionate wife to her late husband, Max Race. She was also a devoted daughter to her late parents, Stanley and Blanche Sawicki. Edith, was also blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. Edith will be remembered for her strength, resilience, and the unconditional love she had for her family.
Edith, our radiant gem, will be sorely missed. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May we all strive to leave behind traces of love as Edith did.
