WINCHENDON – Edmund A.J. Mroz, 92, died peacefully Tuesday morning, May 15th in Broadview Assisted Living in Winchendon.
He was born in Peabody, MA on November 17, 1919, son of the late Emil and Bronislawa (Nachajska) Mroz. A long time resident of Stoneham, he retired to Winchendon in 1987 with his wife, the late Ann Geraldine (Buron) Mroz.
Ed was the 1937 class valedictorian at Salem High School. He was a1942 graduate of Northeastern University receiving a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. During World War Two, Ed was a B-17 navigator in the Army Air Corps, completing 50 missions and reaching the rank of Captain He subsequently served in the Secret Intelligence branch of the Office of Strategic Services in London and Germany.
Following the war, Ed worked as a chemical engineer, specializing in the petroleum and other chemical processing industries. He was an inventor, who was awarded patents in several countries. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Air Force Navigator Observer Association, the Holy Name Society and was a long time volunteer for Boy Scout Troop 539.
His wife of 49 years, Ann, died in 1997. He leaves seven children, Edmund Jr and his wife Celia of Brookline, Elaine of Lunenburg, Thomas of Clemson, SC, Carolyn Sellars and her husband Frederick of Townsend, Richard of Bainbridge Island, WA, Gerald and his wife Paula of Melrose and Francis and his wife Maureen of Framingham; two sisters, Stacia Drabczuk of Peabody and Mary Dabrowski of La Mesa, CA; one brother, Louis of Salem, eleven grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Three brothers, John, Thaddeus and Walter predeceased him.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 20th at 4 P.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. A calling hour will be held from 3 to 4 P.M. preceding the service. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Gardner at a later date.
