ATHOL – Edward J. “Jim” Glenzel, 76, of 739 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, formerly of Winchendon, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 3rd in Athol Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Boston on February 8, 1936, son of the late Edward J. and Emily (Slade) Glenzel and lived on Lake Monomonac in Winchendon for 43 years until moving to Athol three years ago. Jim graduated from Asbury Park High School in Asbury Park, NJ and attended William and Mary College.
Jim proudly served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1962 and was a member of Gardner Post #129 American Legion and its honor guard. He also served on the Selective Service Board for many years. Jim worked for many years in Athol Savings Bank, attaining the position of Vice President until his retirement. He was a member of Cornerstone Church Assemblies of God and was a current deacon and head usher.
Jim enjoyed all sports. He was a former hockey coach at Murdock High School and coached his team to the state championship finals. He was also a former football referee in this area. Jim was an avid wood carver and golfer and had shot three Holes in One. His greatest joy was his family. He enjoyed several years of wintering in Florida with his wife and attended many of his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Harriet L. (Achorn) Glenzel; five children, Suzanne Carpenter and her husband Rick of Winchendon, Kathy Tourigny and her husband Ross of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, Eric Glenzel and his wife Amber of Soldotna, Alaska, Michael Glenzel and his wife Tricia of Westfield, and Matt Glenzel and his fiancé Danielle Wilson of Portland, Oregon; twelve grandchildren, Seth, Levi and Sage Tourigny; Christina, Ryan and Denali Glenzel; Evan, Thea and Drew Glenzel; and Emily, Eli and Jenna Glenzel; a brother Harold Glenzel and his wife Lois of Hingham, one nephew Steve Glenzel and one niece, Karen Bellini.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8th at 10 A.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Barry Risto will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon will be Thursday, June 7th from 4 to 7 P.M. with a Legion Service at 7 P.M.
