WINCHENDON – Erwin Rau, 78, of 87 West Street, Winchendon died peacefully Monday afternoon, October 22nd in Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville, with his family at his side.
He was born in Schwaebich Hall, Germany on October 12, 1934, the son of the late Karl and Lina (Philipp) Rau and moved to this country in 1957. For two years he lived in Philadelphia, and then moved to Agawam, where he lived another two years. In 1961, Erwin moved to Winchendon, where he made his home.
With his brothers, he founded National Seat Co, Ipswich Industries and Rau Brothers, Inc of Winchendon. He retired in 2007. Erwin was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Gardner and was a former member of Winchendon Kiwanis Club.
His wife of 40 years, Irmgard (Lohmiller) Rau, died in 1998. He leaves two children, Stephen D. Rau and his wife Noreen of Arlington, VA and Karen R. Hunt and her husband Richard of Winchendon; two brothers, Ottmar Rau of Winchendon and a twin brother, Manfred Rau of Germany; three grandchildren, Evan J. Rau of Tallahassee, FL, Ian R. Hunt and Lily B. Hunt, both of Winchendon and many nephews and nieces. A brother, Herman E. Rau, predeceased him.
Private funeral services will be held in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon, MA. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
