GARDNER – Eva L. (Fontaine) Shaw, 88, of Gardner, died peacefully Friday morning, January 2nd, at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Holden, MA on July 31, 1926, daughter of the late Benjamin and Ella (Tatro) Fontaine and she grew up in Jefferson, MA in the “north woods.” She had lived in Gardner for many years.
Eva worked many years ago as a welder and later as a seamstress. She began working at Country Home Furnishing in Gardner as a sealer and sander and then became a sprayer until her retirement. Eva was a skilled crafter and could make anything. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting and was an avid walker. Eva also enjoyed cooking and gardening, both her flowers and vegetables. While living at Hillside Gardens, she had been in charge of its Recreation Hall.
Her husband, Leon H. Shaw, died in 2009. She leaves ten children, Leon H. “Chip” Shaw Jr, Bruce E. Shaw of Baldwinville, David E. Shaw and his wife Lori of Longview, WA, Cheryl Ann Garvick and her husband Bruce of Gardner, Debra J. Guitare and her husband Michael of Gardner, Judy Lynn Shaw of East Templeton, William J. Shaw of Gardner, John F. Shaw and his wife Gail of Gardner, Tina L. Cormier of Gardner and Kimberly G. Treshinsky and her husband Jon of Gardner; 40 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She also leaves her brothers and sisters, Elmer Fontaine of Warren, MA, Benjamin Fontaine of VT, Donald Fontaine of Spencer, Allen Fontaine of Spencer, Beverly Bassett of Spencer, Virginia Knight of Westminster and Donna Harding of Gardner, as well as many nieces and nephews. A daughter, Bonnie Lee Archambault and a brother, Charles Fontaine, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10th at 11 A.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Katie Twing-Kamenski will officiate.
Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon at a later date.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Saturday, January 10th from 9 to 11 A.M. preceding the funeral.
