WINCHENDON – Francis G. Gagne, 84, formerly of Winchendon, died peacefully Monday morning, November 28th in Knollwood Nursing Center, West Boylston.

He was born in Winchendon on April 23, 1927, the son of the late Adolphe A. and Adelaide (St. Laurent) Gagne and was a graduate of Murdock High School.  Francis lived for most of his life in Winchendon and had lived in West Boylston for the last three years.

During World War Two, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy.  He served on the NTC Sampson and USS Shakori and was awarded the World War Two Victory Medal.  Francis was a telephone worker for New England Telephone Company for 33 years until his retirement.  He was a former member of Winchendon Rod and Gun Club and Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion.  In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He was an avid reader and loved to travel, having visited France, Poland, Cuba, throughout Canada, Tunisia, Gabon, Mexico and most of the 50 states during his lifetime.

His wife of 53 years, Carolyn R. (Diamantopoulos) Gagne, died on May 18th.  He leaves three sons, Luke F. Gagne of Farmington, MN, Matthew M. Gagne of Leominster and Mark P. Gagne of Oakland, CA; four grandchildren, Nathaniel Dwyre, Gregory Dwyre, Claire Dwyre and Gwendolyn Gagne and many nephews and nieces.  A daughter, Lauren Dwyre, predeceased him, as well as two sisters, Loretta LaClair and Anita Stock.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 1st at 10 A.M.  in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon.  The Rev. Francis A. Roberge will officiate.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.

Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Wednesday, November 30th from 6 to 8 P.M.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern MA, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472 in memory of his wife Carolyn.
