George H. Smith, Jr.

WINCHENDON - George H. Smith, Jr., 79, of 16 Vaine Street, Winchendon, died Saturday evening, June 24th in his residence following an illness. He was born in Gardner on July 24,1926, the son of George H. Smith, Sr. and Mary (Chapalonis) Smith and had resided in Winchendon for 60 years. He spent his winters in Fort Meyers, Florida. George was manager of the former Astrofoam, Inc. in Winchendon before his retirement in 1998. He was previously employed at the General Box Company for many years. George was also an auctioneer at the former State Line Auctions for 30 years. He was a showman and did stand-up comedy and was master of ceremonies in the Fort Meyers area. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War Two, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and the Marine Corps League. George was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the I.O.O.B., both in Fort Meyers. He leaves his fiance, Phyllis J. Munson, with whom he lived; a half sister, Linda Columbus of Otter River, and several nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grandnieces. His wife of 52 years, Lucienne M. (Caouette) Smith, died in 2001. A military service will be held Monday, July 3rd at 3 P.M. in Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. There are no calling hours.
