WINCHENDON – Gilbert C. Schoales, Sr., 80, of 58 Tolman Road, Winchendon, died peacefully Saturday evening, January 15 th in Legend Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gardner.
He was born in Boston on June 10, 1930, the son of the late Herbert and Ruth (Devenney) Schoales and had lived in Winchendon for 45 years.
Gilbert worked as a tractor trailer truck driver for many years at Wachusett Potato Chip Co in Fitchburg. Before retiring, he worked for Aubuchon Hardware, in Westminster, where he worked in Fleet Maintenance and trained the company’s tractor trailer drivers. He enjoyed raising horses at his residence, the Old Tolman Farm in Winchendon. At a young age, he was the mascot for the Fitchburg Fire Department. He was a 1948 graduate of Leominster High School and attended the University of Massachusetts in Stockbridge, MA.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Dorothy M. (Wainio) Schoales; four children, Cynthia L. Morin and her husband Paul of Northborough, Gwendolyn Jacob and her husband Joseph of Gardner, Gilbert C. Schoales, Jr of Aurora, Colorado and Wayne D. Schoales and his wife Tina of Winchendon; ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren as well as nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Winchendon in the spring.
