WINCHENDON - Harold P. Hackett, Jr., 74, of 367 Central Street, Winchendon, died peacefully Sunday morning, July 27th in the Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner. He was born in Gardner on September 24,1933, the son on Harold P. and Fannie (Sund) Hackett and had lived in Winchendon for many years. Harold was a 1951 graduate of the former Templeton High School and a 1953 graduate of Becker Junior College with an Associate Degree in Accounting. From 1953 to 1956, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. A banker for many years, Harold worked at the Colonial Cooperative Bank from 1959 to 1998, when he retired as President of the Bank. From 1964 to 1979, he was Treasurer for the Town of Winchendon. He also served the town as a member of its Board of Registrars. Harold was a former Bank Examiner for the State of Massachusetts. Active in the community, Harold was a former member of the Winchendon Kiwanis Club, Winchendon JC's, Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion, Winchendon Rod and Gun Club and the Republican Town Committee. He was also a member of the United Parish and a former member of the Gardner Rotary Club. Harold was an animal lover and his hobbies included gardening, fishing and playing cards. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Shirley J. (Erickson) Hackett; five children, Kathy A. Blouin and her husband Tim of Winchendon, David P. Hackett and his fiancee Debbie Spaulding of St. Catherine, Ontario, Canada, Susan E. Poikonen and her husband Eric of Rindge, NH, Peter E. Hackett and his wife Lisa of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Karen M. Hackett and her companion Ken LaFond of Winchendon; a sister, Phyllis Watt and her husband Raymond of Templeton and their two sons, Gary Watt and Michael Watt and two grandchildren, Emily Poikonen and Sarah Poikonen. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 30th at 10 A.M. in the Snow-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Jackson L. Williams will officiate. Burial will be in the Masssachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon. Calling hours in the funeral home are Tuesday, July 29th from 6 to 8 P.M. with a Legion Service at 7 P.M.
