WINCHENDON – Ida May (Banovetz) George, 86, of 11 Front Place died Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Alliance Health in Baldwinville.
She was born in Wakefield, in the upper Peninsula of Michigan on May 22, 1934 the daughter of Joseph J. and Arvilla I. (Boleau) Banovetz.
Ida May attended grade school at Puritan and St. Sebastian schools in Bessemer MI, Junior High at Notre Dame Convent in Milwaukee WI, and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer MI., Class of 1952
She was in nursing at Lake Forest Hospital, Lake Forest, IL. She met and married Sargent Adolph O. George (d) of Chicago, IL who was a career service member of the United States Army. They were married for 28 years.
She graduated from Mount Wachusett Community College in 1985 with a degree in Social Sciences. She was initiated into Phi Theta Kappa, National Honor Fraternity on May 11, 1984 and elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior College 1984-85 at age 50.
In 2002 she was awarded at the Boston State Hospital for her outstanding work as a counselor and skills instructor for people with developmental needs. She worked for People’s Bridge Action and R2R. She had also worked for Medical Resources and the Gardner VNA in home health care for the elderly.
She was an avid flower gardener and gave tours of her garden for the Winchendon Garden Club of which she was a member. She was a member of the VFW Post 2158 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 193 in Winchendon, and the Ashburnham, Petersham, and Gardner Golden Ages Clubs.
She leaves five children, Sr. Deborah Rose Rosado of Maryland, Gregory J. George and his wife, Betsy of Winchendon, Kimberly George of Cuba NY, Anthony C. George and his wife, Catherine of Winchendon, Kelley R. LaDeau and her husband, Stephen of Virginia; 16 grandchildren, Christina Gast (husband, Vern), Joseph Rosado (wife Kari), Sabrina Cochran (husband Jeff), Sherry Sheridan (husband Phil), Ashley Couture (husband Henry), Martina George, Curtis George (wife Erica), Shyanne Calcari, and Bonnie Flint (husband Joe); 26 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne Harvey and her husband Raymond (d) of Ramsey MI and Carol Ann Haukkala and her husband Elmer of Ashland WI; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 1, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street, Winchendon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Due to the corona virus pandemic, precautionary measures will be in place including social distancing and the use of non-medical masks.
Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Auxiliary of Winchendon or Winchendon Gardnen Club.
