WINCHENDON – Ilinda (Johnston) May, 90, of 677 Court Street, Keene, NH, formerly of Hyde Park Drive, Winchendon and of Fitzwilliam, NH, died Monday morning, September 16th at Genesis Health Care, Keene.
She was born in Erwin, NC on July 29, 1923, daughter of the late William H. and Leola (Core) Johnston and grew up in North Carolina. In 1940, she graduated from Erwin High School in Erwin, NC and in 1947 graduated from Watts Hospital School of Nursing in Durham, NC.
Ilinda worked for many years at the former Winchendon Hospital and for five years at Athol Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1981. She was a resident of Fitzwilliam, NH for 49 years until moving to Winchendon in 2001. She was a member of Bethany Bible Chapel and Ladies Auxiliary of VFW in Fitzwilliam.
Her husband of 46 years, Rev. Warren H. May, died in 1994. She leaves four sons, Warren H. May Jr and his wife Judy of No. Charleston, SC, William D. May and his wife Candy of Manchester, NH, Jerry C. May and his wife Beverly of Lehigh Acres, FL and Jeffrey L. Herman-May and his husband Mark of Hinsdale, NH; two sisters, Brenda N. McLeod of Calabash, NC and Sheila O. Williams of Fayetteville, NC; her former daughter-in-law, Sheila May, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, as well as nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Charles O. Johnston and Billy M. Johnston, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 20th at 11 A.M. in Bethany Bible Chapel, 727 Spring Street, Winchendon. Burial will be held at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fitzwilliam.
