WINCHENDON – John C. Roberts, 83, of 27 Monadnock Avenue, Winchendon, died peacefully Sunday morning, April 29th in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester, with his family at his side,

He was born in Winchendon on September 18, 1928, son of the late Adelard J. and Arzelie A. (Duval) Roberts and was a lifelong resident of Winchendon.

John worked for 33 years as a truck driver for the State of Massachusetts Highway Department until his retirement.  In later years, he worked as a custodian at Fitchburg Savings Bank, Winchendon Post Office and Davenport Oil Co.  He also mowed lawns for many families in Winchendon.  John entered the service at the age of 17 and proudly served his country during World War Two as a member of the United States Navy.

John was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW.  An avid sports fan, John followed the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Boston Bruins.  He enjoyed playing cribbage and solitaire and enjoyed trips to the Maine Diner, Camp Ellis and Huots Restaurant in Maine.

John leaves his wife of 60 years, Rosalie A. (Charlonne) Roberts; three children, Larry J. Roberts, Paula M. Bateman and her husband Maurice Bateman III, and Philip J. Roberts and his fiancé Lisa Cunha of Middleboro; five grandchildren, Mindy Gagnon and her husband Chris, Jonathan Roberts, Kathryn Roberts, Kristen Roberts and Megan Cunha; a great granddaughter, Kaylan Gagnon and nephews and nieces.  A brother, Adelard J. “A.J.” Roberts Jr., predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 2nd at 11 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street, Winchendon.

Burial, with military honors, will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon will be Wednesday, May 2nd from 8:30 to 10:30 AM.
