NEW BERN, NC – John Fairbanks McMillan, 83, of New Bern, NC and formerly of Winchendon, MA, died peacefully Saturday evening, March 30th at his residence.

He was born in Winchendon on November 5, 1929, son of the late Donald and Pearl (Hager) McMillan and lived in Winchendon for many years.  He had lived in New Bern since May, 2012.

John was a 1947 graduate of Murdock High School and a 1951 graduate of Norwich University, where he graduated with honors with a degree in Civil Engineering.  He later did graduate work at the University of Southern California.

He worked as a civil engineer for Los Angeles County, CA until his retirement.  During his career, he also worked as an engineer for Fairfield Area Surveys in CA, U.S. Coast Guard, Coast and Geodetic Survey, Army Corp of Engineers and Portland Oregon, regional FEMA manager western division. He was a member of Artisan Lodge of Masons in Winchendon and Temple Baptist Church in New Bern.  During the Korean War, John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.

John had many hobbies and interests.  He enjoyed photography, hiking and camping.  He took his family to Yosemite at least twice per year.  Additionally, he was an avid clarinet musician and loved building things, especially anything to do with wood.  As a boy, he enjoyed fishing at Lake Contoocock.  A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, John treasured spending time with his family.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Alice (Marques) McMillan; a daughter, Marianne Pearl Vandermeer and her husband Albert of New Bern; six grandchildren, Jonathan Cary Hayward, Ryan James Hayward, Pieter Eric Vandermeer, Martin Edward Vandermeer, Beatrix Emma Vandermeer and Willem Dirk Vandermeer and a great granddaughter, Catherine Renee Hayward.

Calling hours were held Thursday, April 4th in New Bern.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 8th at 11:00 AM in Hillside Cemetery, Goddard Road, Rindge, NH.  The Rev. Dr. R. Gary Heikkila will officiate.
