WINCHENDON – Lawrence A. Chagnon, 85, of 6 Orient Place, Winchendon, died unexpectedly Monday, April 9th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after being stricken at home.

He was born in Otter River, Templeton on November 13, 1926,  the son of the late Edgar H. and Marguerite (Lamarche) Chagnon, grew up in Templeton and lived in Winchendon for most of his life.

Larry worked hard his entire life.  He was a laborer at New England Wooden Ware for many years and also worked part time as a custodial engineer at Guarantee Bank and Trust and Winchendon Savings Bank.  Larry proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War Two and as a member of the Army during the Korean War.  He later served in the Air Force Reserves.

Larry was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW.  He was one of the founding members of Otter River Sportsman’s Club and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Baldwinville.  A former Little League Coach, Larry loved golfing and skiing and was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.  As a member of the Army Special Services, he played both baseball and football.  He participated in the first organized American football game in Libya.  In his retirement years, Larry loved baking and was well known in the community for sharing his baked goods.  Above all else, Larry loved his family and found his greatest enjoyment from spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Mary E. (Guy) Chagnon; five children, Lawrence A. Chagnon Jr and his wife Corinne of Winchendon, David W. Chagnon and his wife Jennifer of Winchendon, Paula Marie Girard and her husband Gary of Winchendon, John W. Chagnon of Worcester and Cynthia A. LaFreniere and her husband Todd of Baldwinville; one sister, Estelle Wood and her husband Leonard of Templeton, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.  He will be terribly missed by all who loved him.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12th from Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1 Forest Street, Baldwinville.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.

Calling hours in the funeral home will be Wednesday, April 11th from 6 to 8 P.M.  Members of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion will conduct a Legion Service at 7 P.M. Wednesday.
