WINCHENDON – Leo E. Girard, 97, of 402 Maple Street, Winchendon died peacefully at his residence Thursday evening, March 13th with his family at his side, after a short illness, following a long, healthy and vibrant life.
A lifelong resident of Winchendon, he was born on November 19, 1916, the son of the late Arthur and Elidia (St. Pierre) Girard.
Leo worked at the former Heywood Wakefield Furniture Company in Gardner, Level Manufacturing Co. and later worked for over 20 years as a fork lift operator in the shipping department at Thayer Manufacturing Co. During World War Two, Leo proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Star and Victory Medal. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and Eugene M. Connor Post #193 American Legion. Leo enjoyed time with his family and spending time at Lake Mononomac.
His wife of 40 years, Theresa Y. (LaPointe) Girard, died in 2006. He leaves seven children, George E. Ducharme Jr of Key West, FL, Mary Jane Helie of Winchendon, Dennis E. Ducharme of Winchendon, Joyce E. Carrier and her husband Mark of Winchendon, Anthony J. Ducharme and his wife Dodie of Winchendon, Michele M. Comeau and her husband Donald of Winchendon and Lionel “Mickey” Girard and his wife Linda of Gardner, 22 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, a son-in-law, Ernie Couture of Baldwinville and two nieces and nephews. A daughter, Leonet Couture, a brother, Henry Girard and a sister, Rita Perreault predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 18th from Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street, Winchendon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Monday, March 17th from 6 to 8 P.M. Members of Eugene M. Connor Post #193 will conduct a legion ceremony at 7 P.M.
