WINCHENDON - Leon J. Arceci, 89, of 156 Murdock Avenue, Winchendon, died peacefully Wednesday morning, June 30th in UMASS Memorial Healthcare, 119 Belmont Street, Worcester, surrounded by his family, after a short illness. He was born in Winchendon on April 13, 1921, the son of the late Pietro and Maria (Barbadoro) Arceci and was a lifelong resident of Winchendon. Leon was a custodian at Murdock High School for several years until his retirement. He previously worked at BD Whitney's, General Box and Independent Lock Company of Fitchburg. Leon was a 1939 graduate of Murdock High School and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War Two. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon and American Theatre Campaign Ribbon. Leon was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW and was a life member of Eugene M. Conner Post 193 American Legion. He was also a member of Winchendon Country Club and its Senior Golf League. An avid golfer, Leon had shot three Holes In One. In 2002, Leon was inducted in to the Murdock High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He especially treasured time with his family. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Shirley R. (Homon) Arceci; two sons, Peter L. Arceci of Winchendon and Paul J. Arceci and his wife Linda of Charlton; a daughter, Susan S. Normandin and her husband Robert of Lehigh Acres, FL; a brother, Domonic E. Arceci of Brattleboro, VT; a daughter in law, Karen Arceci of Calumet, Michigan; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. A son, David G. Arceci, died in 2006. Four brothers, Emilio V. Arceci, Gino E. Arceci, John A. Arceci and Norman P. Arceci also predeceased him. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3rd from Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street, Winchendon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home will be Friday, July 2nd from 6 to 8 P.M. with a Legion Service at 7 P.M.
