TEMPLETON: Madalyn J. (Smith) Brown, 92, of 1 Otter River Greene, Otter River, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, May 21st, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner. She was born in East Templeton on November 14,1916, the daughter of the late Herbert D. and Jessie (Smith) Smith and lived in East Templeton for most of her life. For the last two years, she had lived in Otter River. Madalyn was a 1936 graduate of the former Templeton High School. She was a member of the Templeton Woman's Club and American Legion Auxiliary in Athol. She was also a member of the East Templeton United Methodist Church and its WSCS. She found her greatest enjoyment spending time with her family. She loved to knit, crochet, bake and enjoyed crafts. At one time she was named the Cook of the Month in the Gardner News. She was especially known for her banana cupcakes. Several years ago, she worked for the former Tri Caterers and also did child care. A very talented and giving lady, she made lap robes for Disabled Veterans, made scarves and mittens for Caps Collaborative, baked pumpkins and crocheted Santa Clauses for her grandchildren. Madalyn also loved to dance and play cards. She enjoyed games and traveling. In recent years, she had become an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed bird watching. Her husband of 56 years, Donald E. Brown, died in 1991. She leaves two children, Donna L. Sans and her husband Robert of Baldwinville and Clayton H. "Skip" Brown and his wife Judy of Baldwinville; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Brown of Petersham; three sisters, Doris Hill of Gardner, Harriet Zukowski of East Templeton and Bonnie Sylvester of Harwichport; 13 grandchildren, Sharon Carrier, Steven Brown, Suzanne Brown, Robert Brown, Pamela Brown, Kandy Brown, Ryan Brown, Randy Brown, Christine Brown, Cynthia Sanden, Courtney Mullins, Michael Sans and Joseph Sans; two great grandchildren, Jason Brown and Jennie Brown and many nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Gordon "Bruby" Brown, who died in 1970 and Richard E. "Dick" Brown, who died last year; a grandson, Jack Brown; two brothers, Kermit Smith and Donald Smith and a sister, Bea Piragis. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 27th at 10 A.M. in the Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Dr. R. Gary Heikkila will officiate. Burial will be in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours in the funeral home will be Tuesday, May 26th from 6 to 8 P.M.
