WINCHENDON – Mardis E. Priest, 89, of 31 Ash Street, Winchendon, died peacefully Saturday morning, September 21st in HealthAlliance Hospital, Leominster.
He was born in Pomfert, VT on November 27, 1923, son of the late Robert E. and Bernice A. (Piper) Priest and was a resident of Winchendon for most of his life. In 1933, Mardis graduated from Murdock High School, where he played football, baseball and hockey. He is a member of Murdock High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Mardis was a foreman with the Winchendon Water and Sewer Department for many years until his retirement in 1980. He served on Winchendon Fire Department for 29 years until his retirement in 1971. During World War Two, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Gardner Municipal Golf Course. He was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post #193 American Legion. He was a member of Artisan Lodge of Masons for over 60 years and was a member of Unitarian-Universalist Society and its standing committee.
He leaves his wife of 67 years, Phyllis V. (Trottier) Priest; two sons, David R. Priest and his wife Lucinda of Leominster and Glenn R. Priest and his wife Mary of Surry, NH; four grandchildren, David M. Priest, Sara Consalvo, Mark Priest and Elisabeth Priest, four great grandchildren; one brother, George E. Priest of North Fork, CA; two sisters, Rita M. Warman of Brookfield and Phyllis P. Ward of Sun City, FL, as well as many nephews and nieces. A brother, Chester E. Priest and two sisters, Ina L. Robbins and Arlene E. Prueser, preceded him in death.
Private funeral services will be held in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
