Marie L. (Merrow) Johnson

February 25, 1936 — March 20, 2014

GARDNER:  Marie L. (Merrow) Johnson, 78, of 26 Crawford Street, Gardner, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, March 20th in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, with her family at her side.

A lifelong resident of Gardner, she was born on February 25, 1936, the daughter of the late Frank and Louise (Stedman) Merrow.  Marie was a graduate of Gardner High School.

Marie worked in retail sales for many years.  She first worked at Sears, W.T. Grant, Almys and The Book Corner.  She later worked as a bank teller at Colonial Cooperative Bank and then returned to retail sales, working at Wal-Mart in its card department.  For many years, she was a member of Chestnut Street United Methodist Church, where she was its choir director.  For the last several years, she was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was a member of its choir.  At one time, Marie was a member of the former Straight From the Heart singing group.  While her children were growing up, Marie was a Girl Scout troop leader and a Cub Scout den mother.  In addition to her love of music, she enjoyed knitting.  Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Her husband of 53 years, Robert L. Johnson, died in 2009.  She leaves four children, Kris Johnson; Kregg Johnson and his wife Christine; Kurt Johnson and his wife Jane, and LuAnn Smith and her husband James, all of Gardner; a sister, Linda Anderholm and her husband Martin of Athol, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.  A sister, Faye Phillips, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will he held Wednesday, March 26th at 11:30 A.M. in Faith Lutheran Church, 627 Green Street, Gardner.  Burial will follow in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.

Calling hours in the church will be Wednesday, March 26th from 10 to 11:30 preceding the service.
