WINCHENDON – Mario A. Gigante, 68, of 200 Springs Road, Bedford, formerly of Winchendon, died peacefully Thursday, March 10th in Edith Nourse Rogers  Memorial Veterans Hospital, Bedford, with his family at his side.

He was born in Winchester, MA on January 17, 1948, son of the late Mariano and Rose Gigante and grew up in Stoneham, where he was a member of St. Patrick’s Church.  He was a resident of Winchendon for several years before living in Bedford.

Mario proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  He was a Purple Heart Recipient and also earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal and two overseas bars as well as the Marksman m-14 ribbon.  He was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion.

Mario had worked as a mail carrier in the Roxbury area.  He was an avid boxing fan and also enjoyed trips to Foxwoods.  He was also a pet lover and enjoyed spending time with his family and cooking.

He leaves two daughters, Melody L. Ackerman and her husband David of Salem, NH and Amy L. Osnato and her husband Robert of Boca Raton, FL; three grandchildren, Gianna, Nicholas and Marcus, and four great grandchildren.

Military funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 15th at 1 P.M. in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon.  There are no calling hours.
