GARDNER – Martha A. (Kangas) Harrington, 92, of 247 Matthews Street, died peacefully Tuesday morning, January 8, 2019 in Gardner Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, with her family at her side.
She was born in Gardner on August 19, 1926, daughter of the late Sulo and Annie (Moore) Kangas and was a lifelong resident of Gardner. Martha was a graduate of the former Stevens Business College in Fitchburg. During the Korean War, Martha proudly served this country as a member of the United States Army.
Martha worked many years as manager of the Credit Bureau of Gardner Chamber of Commerce. She then worked in the Gardner branch of Worcester Credit Bureau, followed by a period as student loan coordinator at New England ALLBANK, formerly Gardner Savings Bank. Martha was a long time member of First Baptist Church, where she had a been active in many capacities. She was a member of Gardner AARP, Gardner Golden Agers, Gardner Woman’s Club, VFW Auxiliary and South Gardner Historical Society.
She leaves her husband of 60 years, Raleigh A. Harrington; a brother, Edward Kangas of Gardner and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, John Kangas, Walter Kangas, Ronald Kangas, Muriel Gravel, Dorothy Moore, Beverly Rice, Carolyn Kendall and Rosemary Kangas.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11 A.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. A calling hour will precede the funeral Monday from 10 to 11 A.M.
Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
