GARDNER: Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Carlson) Johnson, 86, a lifelong resident of Gardner, MA, died peacefully Saturday, December 22nd, at Sterling Village, Sterling, MA after an illness.
Mary was born in Gardner on October 24, 1926, the daughter of the late Signe M. Carlson. Her husband of 44 years, Carl Einar Johnson, died in 1993.
Mary graduated from Gardner High School, Class of 1944. She worked at Gardner Savings Bank for 35 years, retiring as Vice President and Mortgage Officer. She served her community, devoting 36 years as a member of the Gardner Housing Authority. She had also served as Treasurer of Petersham Country Club, the Queen Lake Association and Gardner Quota Club.
Mary was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She had been a longtime active member of the former First Lutheran Church, having served as Church Treasurer, Church Council member and Sunday School Teacher.
She is survived by a nephew, Dr. Stanley R. Gemborys and his wife Janyce of Manomet, MA; a niece, Janice Blake and her husband James and daughter Kirsten of Kennesaw, GA; a grand-niece Kyra Mercer and her husband Chris and son Connor of Duxbury, MA; cousins, Dr. Richard A. Johnson of Boston and Linda Johnson of Gardner, and close friends, Paul, Lina, Leana and Marcus Carlberg of Gardner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 29th at Faith Lutheran Church, 627 Green Street, Gardner. Burial will follow in Green Bower Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
