ORANGE - To all sailors wherever ye may be: and to all salts, sea lawyers, swabs, land lubbers, square-knot admirals, gun deckers, and all the other assorted scavengers of the seven seas: Let it be known by all ye earthly mortals who may have been honored by this sailor’s presence that Master Chief Daniel John Farrell, (USCG) departed this world on July 20, 2013, from his home in Orange, MA surrounded by his family.

Dan was born in Winchendon, MA on February 23, 1959, and spent the majority of his childhood in Baldwinville, MA. He loved growing up in his neighborhood with the families who lived there that surrounded him and his own, and it was there, while delivering papers on his route, that he met the girl he would later marry. He attended Narragansett Regional High School and graduated with the class of 1980. Following high school, he attended Worcester Industrial Technical Institute where he earned a degree in the Ophthalmic Dispensing program in 1983. However, he decided not pursue a career in the eyeglass industry and instead chose to join the United States Coast Guard in 1985. Dan truly loved being a Coastie. He believed in the mission and the core values of the Coast Guard, had the privilege of serving with countless outstanding people, and forged many enduring friendships over the course of his 27-year career.

Dan enjoyed the simple things in life; a day of fishing, a hike in the woods with his faithful companions, Gunther, Brigadoon, Finnegan, and Clanny, an afternoon drive to no place in particular, a tune on the piano, a good book, an occasional nap on the couch, a cold beer on a hot day, a hot meal on a cold night, and a slice of apple pie anytime. More than anything he enjoyed being with his family. Dan will be remembered for his integrity, his humility, his respect and consideration for others, his devotion to duty, his great love for his family, his fantastic sense of humor, and no matter the circumstance, for always having that beautiful smile on his face.

Dan leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Eileene P. Farrell; his son, Daniel J. Farrell, Jr.; his daughter and her husband, Erin K. Farrell Denette and Alexander J. Denette; his mother, Patricia A. Farrell; his brothers, Stephen P. Farrell, Peter J. Farrell, III and wife Julie, Thomas B. Farrell and wife Carol, Joseph I. Farrell and wife Cheryl, and Michael C. Farrell and wife Marnie; his sister, Katherine Martinez; his step-sister Vik Zanotto and husband Frank; his many caring and loving nieces, nephews, and relatives; and countless friends from his hometown, his travels, and his career in the U.S. Coast Guard. His father, Peter J. Farrell, Jr., his sister, Sharon A. Farrell, and his stepmother, Gail C. Farrell, predeceased him.

Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are on Sunday, July 28th from 3 to 6 P.M.

Military funeral services in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home will be held Monday, July 29th at 12 Noon.  Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
