PHILLIPSTON – Nancy H. (Simula) Mustakangas, 72, of Phillipston, died peacefully on Sunday, April 12th in Heywood Hospital, with her family at her side. Her husband of 53 years, Eugene C. Mustakangas Jr., died on November 11, 2014.
Nancy was born in Gardner on August 9, 1942, daughter of Arne and Helen (Allain) Simula. She leaves behind her devoted daughter, Christine L. Cormier and her husband Tom of Royalston; a daughter-in-law, Kimberly (Charland) Mustakangas of Baldwinville; five grandchildren, Jason T. Mustakangas of Gardner, Luke A. Mustakangas of Gardner, Ross G. Cormier of Winchendon, Jessica L. Cormier of Northpole, AK and Nicholas L. Mustakangas of OH; two step grandchildren, Luke L. Fletcher and Brooke C. Fletcher, both of Baldwinville; three great grandchildren, Caleb B. Mustakangas of Gardner, Audrina M. Cormier of Winchendon and John I. Hartwell of Winchendon and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends and her faithful companions, her dogs Mutti and Jennie. Nancy was predeceased by her beloved son, Randy L. Mustakangas on April 16, 2013 and her brother, George A. Simula in 1977.
Nancy attended school in So. Royalston and Athol. She married her husband Eugene M. Mustakangas Jr on May 13, 1961 and resided in Phillipston for 54 years. Nancy was the “Avon Lady” in Royalston and Phillipston for several years before working at Athol Memorial Hospital in its dietary department for 28 years, retiring in 2007.
In her younger years, Nancy enjoyed figure skating, swimming and fishing. She got together weekly with friends for card club and knitting club. She also enjoyed sewing and needlepoint and was an avid reader. She was a former member of Royalston Fish and Game Club and the Birch Hill Rangers Snowmobile Club. Nancy loved to travel and enjoyed trips to the beach. She especially loved gambling at Atlantic City and Mohegan Sun. She also enjoyed dining out with family and friends and going to Rietta Ranch Flea Market. Nancy’s greatest enjoyment was her grandchildren. She enjoyed taking them on vacation, attending their sporting events and school activities. She always saw the best in them and loved them with all her heart.
Nancy was a people person. She was friendly and kind hearted, always with a smile. She will be deeply missed by all, who loved her. Special thanks go out to her home caregivers, Stacy, Kim, Shelly, Katie and Brenda, who made it possible for her to remain in her home throughout her period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 17th at 1 P.M. in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. The Rev. Stephanie Flynn will officiate.
