GARDNER – Nancy Ellen (Wright) Anderson, 81, of 28 Comee Street, Gardner, died peacefully at her residence Saturday morning, September 1st, with her family at her side.
Born in Summit, New Jersey on June 1, 1931, she was the daughter of the late William N. and Lela G. (Murray) Wright. She attended public schools in Warren, MA and continued her education at Russell Sage College as a member of the class of 1953. On June 28, 1952, she married G. Albert Anderson, residing in Orange, NJ until moving to Gardner in 1954.
Nancy served a number of organizations among which were the Baldwinville Hospital Cottages for Children, the Protestant Youth Center, the Baldwinville Nursing Home, and the Knowlton Foundation. She was also active in the Gardner Visiting Nurses’ Association, Women’s Republican Club of Gardner, and United Way of Greater Gardner. She was honored by the Gardner Exchange Club, and received the “Woman of Achievement” award by the Professional Women’s Club for being the first woman to head the Greater Gardner United Way Campaign. Nancy served frequently over the years as a substitute elementary teacher in the Gardner Public Schools.
As a lifelong Christian and a member of Faith Lutheran Church, she was active in Christian education, women’s groups, and personal ministry. She is remembered especially for her hospitality and friendship offered to others.
Together with her husband Al, she enjoyed many seasons of recreational and competitive sailing. She also enjoyed gardening, and was a talented seamstress and homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, G. Albert Anderson; three children, Mark Anderson of Houston, TX, Ellen Johnson and her husband Kenneth of Gill, MA and Nils Anderson and his wife Karen of Gardner, as well as seven grandchildren, Erik, Jeffrey, Hanna, Thomas, Birgitta, Christine and Cameron.
A memorial service will be held Monday, September 10th at 11 o’clock in Faith Lutheran Church, 627 Green Street, Gardner. The Rev. Scott Grimshaw will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Bower Cemetery.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Sunday, September 9th from 6 to 8 P.M. and Monday, September 10th from 10 to 11 A.M. preceding the service at the church.
