WINCHENDON - Norbert J. Fontaine, Jr., 85, of 14 Willow Street, Winchendon died peacefully Monday evening, August 16th in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, 119 Belmont Street, Worcester, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Winchendon on January 26, 1925, the son of the late Norbert J. and Elsie J. (White) Fontaine and was a resident of Winchendon for most of his life. Norbert was an assembler at the former American Can Company for many years until his retirement. He was a graduate of Murdock High School and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He served in Central Europe and was awarded the EAME Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War Two Victory Medal. He was a member of the Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion, Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and the Silver Sneakers. He helped serve dinners for many years for the Winchendon Council on Aging, which once honored him as its Citizen of the Month. He enjoyed being around people, playing cards and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His wife of 48 years Irene R. (Picard) Fontaine, died in 1997. He leaves a son, Steven P. Fontaine and his wife Brenda of Phillipston; a daughter, Linda M. Bredberg and her husband Peter of Winchendon; a sister, Beverly F. Damon of Fitzwilliam, NH; four grandchildren, Steven Fontaine 2nd, Seth Fontaine, Shawn Bredberg and Joseph Bredberg, a great granddaughter, Rebecca Fontaine and several nephews and nieces. A sister, Claire A. Fontaine, predeceased him in 1987. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 20th from Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home will be Thursday, August 19th from 6 to 8 P.M. with a Legion Service at 7 P.M.
