Othro E. "Tom" Sawyer

HUBBARDSTON - Othro E. "Tom" Sawyer, 92, of 38 Root Road, died peacefully at his residence Sunday afternoon, July 2, 2017, with his family at his side.

He was born in Winchendon on November 27, 1924, son of the late Henry D. and Maud G. (Taft) Sawyer.  Tom graduated from Murdock High School, where he was a member of its football team, and graduated from the Templeton Agriculture School and later attended Narragansett Regional School in Templeton nights studying rural engineering.  He had lived in Hubbardston since 1950.

Tom owned and operated the former Sawyer Dairy Farm until 1978.  He later grew and sold fruit and vegetables at Sawyer's Farm and delivered hay well into his eightieth year of age.  He was a selectman for many years for the Town of Hubbardston and belonged to several local farmers cooperative organizations. He was awarded the Outstanding Young Farmer award in recognition of exceptional progress in agriculture and contributions to the community. He was also recognized by the Worcester County League of Sportsmen's Club Inc. for the many years of recreation enjoyed by sportsmen on the Sawyer Farm and farming practices beneficial to wildlife.

His wife, Mildred (Beairsto) Sawyer, predeceased him in 1968.  He leaves five children, Darlene Sawyer of Wattsonville, CA, Elaine Sawyer and Jim Fitzgerald of Fort Myers, FL, Diane Sawyer and Mike Goyette of Fort Myers, FL, Raymond Sawyer and his wife Doreen of Royalston and Robert Sawyer and his wife Robin of Marlboro, MA. Tom also leaves his grandchildren Thomas and Amber Frye, Jacinda Rich, Joseph Jaiceris and his wife Stacy, Christine Sawyer and Nathan, Ashley Sawyer and Steven Robinson, Ryan Sawyer, Kaitlyn Sawyer and Gerrott Faulkingham, Amanda Sawyer and fiancé Derek Baker, along with numerous great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his siblings Robert H. Sawyer, Bradley T. Sawyer, Julia E. McConnell, Rotha Vermette, and Virginia S. Nelson.

The memorial service will be held Friday, July 7th at 11 A.M.  in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon.  A calling hour will precede the service Friday from 10 to 11 A.M..

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Winchendon. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service at the Kamaloht located at 1 North Main Street, East Templeton.
