WINCHENDON – Paul W. Wood, 80, of 9 Cummings Road, Winchendon, died peacefully Monday, January 31 st in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
He was born in Cambridge on November 8, 1930, the son of the late Paul W. and Anna (Gross) Wood and had lived in Winchendon for five years. He previously lived in Mattapoisett for 30 years.
Paul proudly served in the United States Air Force for 23 years. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he returned to school and graduated from SMU, now known as the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He then worked as a fisheries biologist for the NOAA in Woods Hole. He loved to rescue dogs, which was his passion and he worked with dog therapy for many years at Sippican Nursing Home in Marion, MA. Paul was also a graduate of Rockland High School.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Mildred F. (Reid) Wood; four children, Stanley Wood of Jackson, WY, Paula Clement of Milford, MA, Dean Wood of Corpus Christi, TX and Pamela Fleming and her husband Ed of Boxborough, MA, a sister, Jeanette Davenport of FL, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne in the spring. There are no calling hours.
Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League of one’s choice.
