WINCHENDON – Philip W. Casavant, 84, formerly of 15 Royalston Road North, died peacefully Monday evening, August 17th in Valley Stream Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Fitchburg with his family at his side.
He was born in Winchendon on July 23, 1931, son of the late Henry A. and Ruth K. (Laclair) Casavant and was a 1951 graduate of Murdock High School, where he was Class President and Captain of its football team. He also attended Nichols College. Phil later played football for the United States Army football team and semi-pro football for the Gardner Merchants and Gardner Gymnasts football teams.
Phil worked as a contractor and built 40 to 50 homes in the Winchendon area. An amazing drywaller in the area, Phil owned and operated Toy Town Drywall and Building Co. and also owned a lumber yard for many years. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Eugene M. Connor Post #193 American Legion, Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post #2158 VFW and the Elks. During the Korean War, he proudly served in the United States Army. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. At one time, he served on the honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as serving on the honor guard at the funeral of President Harry S. Truman.
His wife, Nancy D. (Loomis) Casavant, died in 1980. He leaves a son, Michael P. Casavant of Baldwinville; two daughters, Kelly A. Casavant of Westford and Kimberley D. Bartlett and her husband Brian K. Bartlett of Winchendon; two brothers, Dennis Casavant of Winchendon and David Casavant of Winchendon; a sister, Rita Bolton of CA; three grandchildren, Kristina Ruth Casavant, Kristopher Philip Girard and Paige Dawn Girard and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Henry Casavant, Richard Casavant and Eugene Casavant and two sisters, Helen Richards and Rachel Raymond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 21st at 10 A.M. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce Street. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon are Thursday, August 20th from 5 to 7 P.M. A Legion Ceremony will be conducted at 6:30 P.M.
