WINCHENDON – Remo Adriano Giardini, age 90, formerly of 12 Belmont Avenue, Winchendon, died peacefully Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in Baldwinville Nursing Home.
A lifelong resident of Winchendon, Remo was born on December 22, 1922, the son of the late Eliseo and Catarina (Bogetti) Giardini. He graduated from Murdock High School with the Class of 1940.
While in high school, Remo worked in his family’s store, the Co- Operativa Italiana delivering groceries to the neighborhood families. During World War II, he worked as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and later at General Electric. After the war, he owned and operated an auto body shop with the late Sulo Karvonen.
Remo was best known as the owner of the former Casa Giardini Restaurant, which he owned and operated for 38 years, retiring in 1989. A day did not go by when someone did not reminisce with Remo about the wonderful Italian food at Casa Giardini’s. Remo also served on the Board of Directors of the Colonial Cooperative Bank for many years.
Remo enjoyed spending winters in Florida with his wife and traveled twice to Italy. A sports enthusiast, he followed all of the major Boston professional sports teams and horse racing.
His wife of 57 years, Beverly L. (Bartlett) Giardini, died in 2003. He leaves several nephews and nieces and many dear friends. A sister, Lilla Horneij, and a nephew, Michael Sbrocca, predeceased him.
Calling hours will be held from 11am to 12 noon on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12 Noon. The Rev. F. Calvin Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
