WINCHENDON – Richard Thomas LaPointe, 77, of 94 Grove Street, Winchendon, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, February 29th, 2012, surrounded by his family while in the Legend Rehabilitation Center, Gardner, following a long illness.
He was born in Winchendon on February 17, 1935, the son of Raoul A. and Mildred M. (Alber) LaPointe and lived in Winchendon his entire life.
Richard was a devoted father, grandfather and husband. He was a master woodworker, crafting and designing chairs, and kitchen and dining room furniture throughout his life at Temple Stuart in Baldwinville and Nichols and Stone Company in Gardner, and his own business, LaPointe’s Custom Chair. He is well known for crafting miniature replicas of the Toy Town Horse with many being proudly displayed by Winchendon natives all around the country.
He was an outstanding baseball player at Murdock High School, dedicated coach in the Winchendon Little League, and a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. He enjoyed listening to Neil Diamond, and most recently, keeping in touch with family and friends on Facebook. He served our country admirably in the United States Army, enlisting in 1954 and receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1956. He was a member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion. In his later years, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and both his home and heart were always open to anyone that stopped by the house, where you could see all of the amazing things he created from a single piece of wood.
Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth M. (Blake) LaPointe; six daughters, Kim M. LaPointe of Bonita Springs, FL, Tammy L. Paul and her husband Arthur Paul, Sharon L. LaPointe, Karen L. Boutell and her fiancé Shannon, Tina Laperriere and her husband Ricky Laperriere, all of Winchendon and Tracy L. Snyder and her late husband Dennis of Athol; four sons, Michael R. LaPointe and his wife Doreen, Ricky T. LaPointe and his wife Kim, David A. LaPointe and his wife Marcy, and James D. LaPointe and his wife Janine, all of Winchendon; two sisters, Kathreen M. LaPointe of Deerfield Beach, FL and Charlene M. LaPointe of Rutland; three brothers, John A. LaPointe of Winchendon, Gary D. LaPointe of Mineola, NY and R. Donald LaPointe of Manchester, NH; 15 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 5th at 10 AM in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon. Deacon Paul Carrier will officiate.
Burial, with military honors, will be in Calvary Cemetery, Winchendon.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be held Sunday, March 4th from 4 to 7 PM. A Legion Service will be held at 7 PM.
