WINCHENDON – Robert C. Smith, 79, of 2 Gage Place, Fitchburg, formerly of Winchendon and Fitzwilliam, NH, died peacefully Saturday, May 21 st , at his residence.
He was born in Keene, NH on May 29, 1931, the son of the late Lewis and Mary F. (Carroll) Smith and lived in Winchendon since 2004 until moving to Fitchburg last year.
Bob was a trailer truck driver for Ken Crocker Trucking Co. in Fitzwilliam, NH for 14 years until his retirement. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation. Bob was a life member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion and Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW of Winchendon. Bob was also a life member of Disabled American Veterans. Bob enjoyed deer hunting and playing bingo. Before moving to Winchendon in 2004, Bob had lived in Fitzwilliam, NH for 14 years.
Bob was predeceased by his two wives, Beverly (Wall) Smith, who died in 1954 and Norma (Donaldson) Smith, who died in 1998. He leaves his companion of 9 years, Waunita Edson of Winchendon; a brother, Walter E. Smith of Keene, NH and nephews and nieces.
Calling hours in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon will be held Wednesday, May 25 th from 5 to 7 P.M. Member of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion will conduct a Legion Service at 7 P.M.
Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fitzwilliam, NH at a later date.
