GARDNER – Robert E. Noponen, 65, of 195 Saunders Street, Gardner died peacefully Thursday evening, November 24th in Life Care Center of Leominster.
He was born in Gardner on January 15, 1946, the son of the late Waino E. and Malfissa A. (DiPaoli) Noponen, and graduated from Gardner High School in 1964. Bob was a lifelong resident of Gardner.
Bob worked for many years as manager of the former Gardner Appliance on Main Street. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star and Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was a member and Past Commander of Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion in Winchendon.
An active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Bob had served on the Church Council, taught Confirmation Classes and was the former Church Treasurer. During his high school years, Bob was a member and Master Councilor of the Order of DeMolay, and he attained coveted Degree of Chevalier. He enjoyed music, crossword puzzles and golfing. Bob once shot a Hole in One and a double eagle.
He leaves his son, Robert W. Noponen and his wife Sarah; his former wife Charlotte Noponen of Winchendon; a brother, Wayne Noponen and his wife Peggy of Windsor, CT and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 2nd at 11:30 A.M. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1200 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg. The Rev. Wayne Baldyga will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
