Roland A. Favreau

August 18, 1929 — January 7, 2012

GARDNER - Roland A. Favreau, 82, of 49 Lovewell St., Gardner, died on Saturday, January 7 after a short illness with loving family members by his side.

He was born in Gardner on August 18, 1929 to the late Edmond and Jeannine (Houde) Favreau, and was a lifelong resident of the city.

Roland and his wife, Mary Alma (LeBlanc) Favreau, were married on August 8, 1964 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Gardner. The couple, who celebrated their first date each year, marked their 48th anniversary in November 2011.

Besides his wife, Roland is survived by his daughter Patricia Favreau-McKinley, son-in-law David McKinley, and granddaughter Lily Elise McKinley of Winchester; a brother Edmond Favreau, Jr. of Port Orange, Florida; in-laws Yvonne and Robert Allard of Belchertown, and Emilio and Irene Magliacane, Ronald LeBlanc, and Susanna Favreau of Gardner; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is pre-deceased by his daughter Karen Favreau, who passed away in July 2010, and a brother Leonard Favreau.

Roland worked at his family’s business, Favreau Oil Co., for nearly 25 years before securing a mechanic position at Fitchburg Gas & Electric—Unitel, which he held for 23 years.
Roland served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, rising to the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the VFW Post #905. He was also a longtime member of Holy Spirit Church in Gardner where he helped out at church fairs and collected for the Bishop’s Fund.

A car and motorcycle enthusiast, Roland had raced in motorcycle competitions in his younger years. Fascinated with electronics, he built an early prototype of a snowmobile from scratch while in his twenties along with a number of sailboats. In 1967, The Gardner News printed a photograph of a small electric car he had created for his daughter Patricia. The two later bonded over airplane and helicopter lessons. More recently, he built and ran radio-controlled boats across Comet Pond in Hubbardston. A jack of all trades, Roland delighted in improving and maintaining every facet of his and his wife’s home.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Church, 50 Lovewell Street, Gardner on Saturday, January 14th at 10:30 AM followed by the burial at St. John’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to House of Peace and Education Inc., 20 Barthel Ave., Gardner, MA 01440.

Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon is directing arrangements.
