WINCHENDON – Rudolf W. Arlig, 94, of 278 Hale Street, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, June 17th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, with his family at his side.
A lifelong resident of Winchendon, Rudy was born on December 23, 1919, son of the late Andrew W. and Ellen (Rogstad) Arlig and graduated in 1938 from Murdock High School.
Rudy worked as a machinist for many years. He had worked at Baxter D. Whitney and Sons, Miniature Precision Ball Bearing in Keene, Leverett Machine in Orange and Goodspeed Machine Company in Winchendon until his retirement. He was a long-time member of the United Parish, where he had served as a deacon and worked on its Building and Grounds Committee. He was a long-time member of Eugene M. Connor Post #193 American Legion, Winchendon Council on Aging and CAC. He had also done custodial work at Church at Old Centre.
Rudy proudly served his country as a member of United States Army during World War Two. A machine gunner, he received three battle stars for action in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany and also received the American Theatre and European Theatre Ribbons, the Combat Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Medal. He was awarded the Bronze Star in a ceremony about ten years ago at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
His wife of 59 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (MacQueston) Arlig, died in 2002. He leaves three children, Constance J. “Connie” Arlig of Gardner, Douglas W. Arlig and his wife Patricia of Berlin, Germany, and Glenn D. Arlig of Gardner; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, nephews and nieces and his close friend, Roberta Million. He was predeceased by two brothers, Henrik A. Arlig and Carl E. Arlig and a grandson, Russell Arlig.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 25th at 7 P.M. in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street. The Rev. F. Calvin Miller will officiate.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Wednesday, June 25th from 5 to 7 P.M. Members of Eugene M. Connor Post #193 American Legion will conduct a Legion Ceremony at 6:30 P.M.
