WINCHENDON - Selvino A. "Sal" Marinelli, of 35 Ash Street, Winchendon, died late Wednesday, June 14th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, following an illness. He was born in Winchendon, the son of Bazilio Marinelli and Justina (Manoni) Marinelli Piermattei and was a lifelong resident. Sal attended Murdock High School and left in his junior year to join the U.S. Navy in 1943. He saw action in the Invasion of France at Omaha Beach in 1944 and the Invasion of Southern France. He was discharged in 1945. He received his GED in 1999. Sal joined the Winchendon Police Department in August of 1958 and retired as Chief of Police on August 9,1984. An avid golfer, he won 23 club championships and set two course records. He shot a 63 at the Winchendon Country Club and a 66 at Westminster Country Club. He was a life member of the Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a member of the Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion, the Mass. Police Chiefs Association, the New England Police Chiefs Association and the Winchendon Country Club. He was a former 20 year member of the Winchendon Kiwanis Club, and was a former Deputy Sherriff for Worcester County. Sal was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Wendell P. Clark Community Center and served as President for 2 years. He leaves his wife, Silvi (Ots) Marinelli; three sons, Bruce D. Marinelli, Richard S. Marinelli and Jeffrey S. Marinelli, all of Winchendon; a daughter, Amy Bennett of Winchendon; two brothers, Lindo Piermattei of Winchendon and Dante Piermattei of Worcester; a sister, Nedina M. Koldys of Winchendon; 8 grandchildren, Korii Bates, Brittney Marinelli, Dillon Marinelli, Dawn Marinelli, Richard Marinelli, Sal Marinelli, Lauren Bennett and Kayla Bennett; 3 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Chelso Piermattei, in 2003. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wendell P.
